Lubricants are a functional material which reduce friction, lower emissions and improve fuel economy.

Technical focus area: surface interactions

With new processes, we can tailor new materials not just in terms of chemistry but also in relation to their physical structure.  Materials can now be designed with specific properties suited to perform a vast range of functions. There is an enormous and only partially exploited or understood potential for the use of novel functional materials in a diverse range of oil industry applications.

At ICAM, researchers across physics, chemistry and engineering are working to understand the properties, design and operation of functional materials. Research looks to invent novel materials and provide and assess various types of material for application in the oil industry.
